CGM is an easy, painless alternative to diabetic test strips. A small sensor is placed under the skin on your arm. The sensor is replaced every 10 to 14 days depending on the brand of CGM you are using. The sensor takes continuous readings of your glucose levels in the interstitial fluid, which surrounds your blood cells. These readings are transmitted to a monitoring device or an app on your phone to display your glucose readings.
No, but in most cases, CGM is for insulin dependent diabetics. Depending on your insurance, you may not be covered if you are not using insulin, however some insurances, including Medicare Part B will cover CGM if you have had a history of significant hypoglycemic events. Other insurers may not cover it for that reason alone and would require you to pay for CGM supplies. If you are interested in purchasing CGM without insurance, a prescription from your healthcare provider is still required.
Yes. CGM monitors and sensors are designated as prescription only medical devices. Even if you do not qualify for insurance coverage and want to purchase CGM out-of-pocket, a prescription from your healthcare provider is required.
We strive to get CGM to you within days of receiving the prescription. However, there are various documentation requirements that insurance providers require and getting complete documentation from your healthcare provider can take time. Many insurance providers also require prior authorization before we can provide supplies to you. On average, we are able to get CGM to you within a week of receiving the prescription, but if documentation is incomplete, or the insurance requests more information for prior approval, it can take 3 to 4 weeks before we can get you started on CGM.
CGM sensors have an adhesive coating on them to keep them on your skin. However, there are times when the sensor may fall off. To prevent this we will supply transparent dressing for you to use to help keep your CGM sensor adhered to your arm. There are a few things you can do to make it adhere better and might not require the use of the extra patch:
· Clean the area you are applying the sensor to thoroughly with soap and water.
· Allow it to dry completely.
· Shave off any hair in the area.
Depending on which brand of CGM you are using, the sensors transmit data for 10 to 14 days. The Dexcom brand of sensors are used for 10 days before needing to be replaced. Freestyle Libre sensors are used for 14 days before needing to be replaced.
CGM can be a solution for all types of diabetes, including Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. However, most insurances do require the use of insulin. If your diabetes is managed through diet, lifestyle, and oral medications, you may not qualify for CGM through your insurance carrier.
Many insurance companies have started to cover CGM supplies, however not all insurance will cover CGM. Each insurance company is unique in their requirements, with most requiring insulin usage, or significant hypoglycemic events. Some manufacturers of CGM have established discount programs with insurance companies, so that even if your insurance does not cover CGM directly, a discounted purchase price is applied. Quinlan’s will work with your insurance and healthcare provider to establish whether your insurance will cover CGM.
How do I remove my sensor and patch?
When the sensor (and patch, if needed) are applied to your skin for 10 to 14 days, it may be uncomfortable to remove. Use of baby oil or mineral oil may make the process easier. We also have adhesive remover available for purchase if you want to thoroughly cleanse your arm before applying a new sensor and patch.
Using a CGM device can make it easier to manage Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Some people use CGM for a week to understand their blood sugar patterns. Most use CGM long-term.
A CGM device can:
Better Manage your Glucose Levels Everyday
Alert you to highs and lows
Reduce how many fingerstick checks you need to do
Lead to more personalized care
The CGM will create an alert and might display a graphic that shows whether your glucose level is rising or dropping—and how quickly—so you can choose the best way to reach your target range.
Over time, keeping your glucose levels in the healthy range can help you stay well and prevent diabetes complications. The people who benefit the most from a CGM are those who use it every day or nearly every day.
Avoid touching the adhesive area on the sensor.
Change Sensors Regularly Every 10-14 Days
Replace CGM transmitters if needed
CGM is covered by Medicare and most major insurances. To be eligible for Medicare coverage, you must:
